James Kenneth Atkinson, 69, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013.  Born in Jefferson, SC he was a son of the late James Owen “Runt” and Marie Elizabeth Middleton Atkinson.  He was retired from Sonoco in Hartsville, SC.  He enjoyed the outdoors, dogs and restoring old cars.

Surviving are his son, Darryl Atkinson of McBee, SC, daughters, Kathy A. Horton of Jefferson, SC, Brigitte McAteer of McBee, SC, grandchild, Hannah Horton of Jefferson, brothers, John O. (Susan) Atkinson of Cheraw, SC, Neal (Mamie) Atkinson of Columbia, SC and former spouse Ann Atkinson of McBee, SC.

The family will receive friends 1:30 PM to 3:00 PM Friday, January 25, 2013 at Macedonia Baptist Church, Jefferson, SC.  A graveside service will be held 3:00 PM Friday, January 25, 2013 at Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery, Jefferson, SC.

William L. “Billy” Oakley

Cheraw, SC

William L. “Billy” Oakley, 74, died Monday, January 21, 2013.  Born in Chesterfield, SC he was the son of the late Luther and Violia Chewning Oakley.  He was retired from Spartan Foods where he was a District Manager.  He was a member of Brocks Mill Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC.

Surviving are his son, Keith Oakley of Cheraw, SC, a sister, Gloria Jean Brewer of Bishopville, SC, a granddaughter, Lela Oakley of Cheraw, SC, and a life companion Sue Wallace Anderson.

The family will receive friends 12 noon to 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.  A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 23, 2013 in the Chapel of Kiser Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Brocks Mill Baptist Church Cemetery, Cheraw, SC.

Mary Catherine Quick Creech

Wallace, SC

Mary Catherine Quick Creech, 96, died Saturday, January 19, 2013.  Born in Kollock, SC she was a daughter of the late Alexander and Jincey Idella Driggers Quick.  She was the widow of Hardin Creech.  She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church, Bennettsville, SC.  She was retired from Wallace School where she served as the Cafeteria Manager.  She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and working in her flowers.  She was a great cook and was known for her “Famous” Coconut Cake.  She loved spending time with her family.

Surviving are her sons, James “Jimmie” E. (Renee) Creech, Thomas “Tommy” H. (Jo Linda) Creech all of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Beulah C. Black of Bennettsville, SC, Frances C. (K.T.) Tarleton of Cheraw, SC, Barbara C. (Jimmy “Jap”) Leviner of Wallace, SC, fourteen grandchildren and twenty four great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband listed above, also, brothers, Fred Quick, James Quick, Charlie Quick, Manning Quick, Thornell Quick, Daniel Quick, sister, Leila Q. Bennett, Ruby Q. Creech and a son-in-law, Charles Black.

The family will receive friends 1:00 PM, Monday, January 21, 2013 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC.  A funeral service will be held 2:00 PM, Monday, January 21, 2013 in the Chapel of Kiser Funeral Home.

Shirley Pierce Taylor, formerly of Cheraw, SC, 74, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Born in Cheraw, SC she was a daughter of the late William Fred and Thelma Ruth Harding Pierce. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. She was the owner of Balloons, Flowers and Gifts in Cheraw, SC. She enjoyed cooking and talking. She loved spending time with her family.

Surviving are her sons, Buddy (Laura) White, Jr. of Florence, SC, Joe (Mary) Taylor of Cheraw, SC, daughters, Mary (Michael) Elizabeth Dixon of Patrick, SC, Vicki (Jerry) Burr of Darlington, SC, sisters, Marvelle (Tony) Hancock of Cheraw, SC, Ruthie Freeman of Fountain Inn, SC, a sister-in-law, Adelia Pierce of Cheraw, SC, twelve grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents listed above, also, brothers, Joe Pierce, Charlie Pierce and Freddie Pierce.

The family will receive friends 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM Friday, January 18, 2013 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service will be held 11:00 AM, Saturday, January 19, 2013 at Midway Baptist Church, Cheraw, SC. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

James Steve Starling

Cheraw, SC

James Steve Starling, 54, died Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Born in Darlington County, SC he was a son of the late Levi and Edna Steen Starling. He loved NASCAR. He loved playing cards with family and friends. He loved spending time with grand kids. He enjoyed fishing.

Surviving are his wife, Linda Sue Starling, sons, Jason Dewayne Starling, Anthoney Steven Starling, a daughter, Bridgette Nicole Starling, a brother, Mark Starling all of Cheraw, SC, also, four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents listed above, and a brother Chris Starling.

Betty Lou Horton

Betty Lou Horton, 75, died Wednesday, January 9, 2013. Born in Cheraw, SC she was the daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin and Ela Mae Rivers Bennett. She was married to the late Jackie Horton. She attended Westside Baptist Church and North Cheraw Baptist Church’s bible study group. Mrs. Horton retired from Stanley Tools in Cheraw and was a homemaker and care giver.

Surviving are her daughter Cindy Brigman of Cheraw, SC, brothers Bobbie Bennett of Cheraw, SC, Jimmy Earl Bennett of Ranger, TX, Lewis Bennett of Waco, TX, John Bennett of Cheraw, SC, sisters Peggy Smith of Cheraw, SC, Delores Roysdgen of Lafette, TN, grandchildren Kristina Garrison, Cassandra Bennett, and great-grandchildren Will Garrison, Olivia Garrison, Evan Garrison, Piper Bennett.

The family will receive friends 2:00 PM, Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Kiser Funeral Home, Cheraw, SC. A funeral service will be held 2:30 PM Saturday, January 12, 2013 following the visitation, in the funeral home chapel.

Mary A. Blanks

Mrs. Mary A. Blanks, 84, died Friday, January 11, 2013. Born in Jefferson, S.C., she was a daughter of the late John Wylie and Virginia Gregory Atkinson. Mrs. Blanks was a devoted Christian who loved her family and church. She read her Bible every day and was a member of the Love Sunday School class at Park Street Baptist Church, Columbia, SC.

Surviving are her husband of 65 years, Cecil Everett Blanks; daughter, Barbara Jean “BJ” Blanks Nelson (Larry) of Columbia; grandson, Nick Nelson of Anderson and granddaughter, Lauren Blanks Nelson of Columbia.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by six sisters and five brothers.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Ruben Mayer and staff for their loving care.

Funeral service for Mary Jean Atkinson Blanks will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 14, 2013, at Park Street Baptist Church, with burial in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10 until 11:00 a.m. at the church. Kiser Funeral Home, and Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel, are assisting the family.

Memorials may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
